Welcome future students to NC State’s Operations Research Program (OR). Unlike many universities, our OR program is a joint graduate program. It is shared by NC State’s Colleges of Engineering, Sciences and the Poole College of Management.

Our faculty teaches OR courses, supervises OR students and administers the program. They come from engineering, sciences, management, forestry and textiles.

Our goal is to help you::

and finally, how to apply to NC State

About Our Program

Operations Research activities began at NC State in 1963, first as a couple of courses, then as a minor.

The OR Program became “official” on January 16, 1970. Since then, OR has stood as a separate degree-granting graduate program. It admits its own students, establishes its own academic requirements, and awards its own degrees.

What is Operations Research?

Operations Research and Management Sciences (OR) uses scientific methods to study systems that require human decision-making.

OR is interdisciplinary, drawing from and contributing to many fields, including mathematics, engineering, economics, and the physical sciences.
