During a student’s career, there comes a time when all the hard work and effort finally pays off. For some, it is getting that dream job. For others, it is seeing your work published in renowned journals or winning research awards. Jabari Myles, a Ph.D. student in the Operations Research Program, has reached this incredible milestone in his career by having his research paper published in Management Science, one of the most prestigious journals in his field.
Maria Mayorga, Goodnight Distinguished Chair in Operations Research, emphasized the significance of this accomplishment. “The journal Management Science is one of the top-ranked journals in the field of operations research. The acceptance rate is extremely low, and the review process is quite rigorous,” she explained. “Thus, Jabari’s work being published there not only signals the technical rigor of the work but also has significant managerial implications.”
Management Science publishes groundbreaking research on the theory and practice of management. It covers many topics, including strategy, entrepreneurship, technology and all functional business areas, such as accounting, marketing and operations. Myles’s paper focuses on solving a decades-old problem in inventory management. “You can think of this as being able to satisfy demand from different warehouses and being able to use different kinds of materials for some realized demand,” explained Myles. “We show that a base stock policy performs well by giving analytical guarantees and performing numerical experiments.” Solutions like this help optimize business practices, save money, reduce waste and satisfy customers.
In addition to being published in Management Sciences, Jabari’s paper won an award in the highly competitive JFIG paper competition at the INFORMS conference. This award further emphasizes the significance and quality of his research. “I am extremely proud of Jabari for his achievements and am looking forward to seeing his future work,” added Mayorga. Reflecting on his achievement, Jabari shared, “It’s an honor to have our work published in one of the best journals in our field and see years of hard work being recognized and appreciated. I hope that this is the first of many I will publish in Management Science.”
Myles also emphasizes the role of his team and professors. “I am the second author of this paper. Levi DeValve allowed me to contribute and join him in these efforts, so none of it would have been possible without him,” he explained. Myles also credits part of his success to his professors. “Courses such as Stochastic Programming with Osman Ozaltin and Queues and Stochastic Service Systems with Yunan Liu enabled me to contribute to this paper.”
Myles’s milestone highlights his dedication and talent and inspires his future endeavors. “This has given me a love for inventory management problems and shown me how much effort it takes to get the kind of results I want in my career,” he reflected. His work has sparked a passion, and his success promises an exciting career ahead in research and academia.
