Julie Swann, Allison Distinguished Professor and head of the Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at NC State University, and an INFORMS Fellow, was elected president-elect of INFORMS. After a year on the INFORMS Board as president-elect, Dr. Swann will assume the presidency in 2024.
Dr. Swann was co-founder and president of the Junior Faculty Interest Group (JFIG) at INFORMS from 2001-2003. She also served as president, Section on Public Sector Operations Research; chair, MSOM Supply Chain SIG (2009-2011); Subdivisions Council (2009-2011) as well as a member of the Strategic Planning Committee (2018) and Advocacy Governance Committee (2020-2022).
As an academic, Dr. Swann is an affiliate faculty in the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering at both NC State and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before joining NC State, Swann was the Harold R. and Mary Anne Nash Professor in the Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. There, she co-founded and co-directed the Center for Health and Humanitarian Systems (CHHS), one of the first interdisciplinary research centers on the Georgia Tech campus. Starting with her work with CHHS, Swann has conducted research, outreach and education to improve how health and humanitarian systems operate worldwide. In 2009-2010, Swann worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as an advisor on the H1N1 pandemic response.
Swann has received several awards, including an NSF CAREER Award (2004), the GT Steven A. Denning Faculty Award for Global Engagement (2016) and INFORMS Volunteer Service Award (2020). She is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Engineering and the Institute of Industrial Systems Engineers.
